A Study of the Representation of Ethnic and Cultural Minorities in Video Games
Diverse Gaming Insights
Overview
How do We Actually Improve Representation?
Ultimately, representation needs to be improved. The majority of characters inside video games are white men between the ages of 18 and 35. This statement also rings true outside of video games, with most developers and companies being made up of the same kind of demographic. So, how does that change?

Tips on How to Improve
Although there is no one perfect way to improve representation with a single character, storyline, or game, there are efforts which can be made to reach that ultimate goal of perfectly equal representation.

- Create more characters and storylines which are based around minorities.
- Highlight the struggles and stories of minorities, but also make them seem normal and relatable.
- Create more diversity in the workplace. Without minorities to tell these stories, the stories may not be told at all.
- Be respectful. When representing real people, there is no caution that should be overlooked. Culture, language, religion; it's all important to the people being represented.
